New Year, New Adventures: Exciting Hobbies I'm Trying This Year (and Why You Should Too)

As the calendar flips to a new year, there’s an undeniable sense of possibility in the air. The fresh start, the excitement of what’s to come, and the endless growth opportunities all seem to be calling. While I embark on my busiest year yet I am determined to take a step back from the hustle of studying, writing, and planning travel through new hobbies. Yes, you heard that right! I have decided to dive into 12 brand-new adventures and embrace hobbies that I've always wanted to explore but never quite found the time for.

This year I’m embracing all of life's possibilities that can be found in the joy of discovering new passions. Whether it’s a creative outlet, a physical challenge, or a way to unwind, trying something new offers a wealth of benefits. You get to tap into your creative side, improve your mental well-being, and even meet new people along the way. So, without further ado, let me share with you the exciting hobbies I’m taking on this year and why I think you should consider adding them to your own list of new adventures!

(This list is in no particular order)

1. Rug Tufting: Creating Cozy Masterpieces

The first hobby I thought of was rug tufting. I’ve been fascinated by the art of rug-making for a while now. It comes as no surprise to my friends and family since I have been obsessed with fiber arts since university. (I already crochet, knit, cross-stitch, embroider, and sew). Rug tufting is a creative craft where you use a tufting gun to create intricate designs, with yarn, on a fabric backing. The beauty of this hobby is that it allows for total creativity—whether I want to make a fun abstract design or a calming, earthy pattern, the possibilities are endless. Plus, the satisfaction of finishing a rug and seeing it come to life under your hands is guaranteed to be an incredibly fulfilling feeling.

Why try it?
Rug tufting is a great way to nurture your creativity and relaxation. The repetitive motion of tufting can be incredibly meditative, and having a tangible, handmade piece at the end of it feels like a true accomplishment. Plus, creating your own rugs means you can bring your personality into your home decor.

2. Bullet Journaling: Organizing in Style

This one I started promptly on January 1st. Decorative bullet journaling is all about making organization fun and creative—using colors, drawings, stickers, and beautiful layouts to track your life in a way that feels personal and artistic. It’s a great way to stay on top of tasks while indulging in a little creativity. It also makes my busy days look a little less drab.

Why try it?
Decorative bullet journaling is an excellent way to stay organized while also nurturing your artistic side. It encourages mindfulness, helps you set goals, and lets you visually document your life in a way that feels truly yours.

3. Pottery: Getting Your Hands Dirty (Literally)

There’s something so satisfying about working with my hands. I used to sculpt things from the mud as a child. Alas, I was never allowed to bring my creations into the house 😪. You can say this one will be a way to heal my inner child. Pottery allows you to create something out of nothing—turning a lump of mud into a beautiful, functional piece of art. This year, I’m planning to explore both hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. I’ve always admired hand-thrown pottery, so learning how to craft my own bowls, mugs, and vases is high on my list.

Why try it?
Pottery is not only an amazing creative outlet but also a fantastic way to de-stress. The tactile nature of molding clay is a grounding experience that allows you to clear your mind and focus on the present moment. Plus, there’s nothing quite like using something you’ve made with your own hands every day.

4. Soap Making: Crafting Beautiful Scents

Who doesn’t love a good, luxurious bar of soap? Soap making is the perfect combination of creativity and practicality. I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of crafting my own soap with unique scents, colors, and textures. Not only is it a great creative outlet, there is the science of chemistry to bring it all together. And as a very picky soap buyer who can’t stand the smell of most scents, I am surprised I have not already tried this.

Why try it?
Soap-making is a fun way to combine creativity with self-care. You get to experiment with different scents, essential oils, and natural ingredients to create products that are gentle and good for your skin. Plus, homemade soaps make excellent gifts!

5. Tea Making: Brewing Up a Storm

I’ve always been a tea enthusiast, but this year, I’m going deeper into the world of tea-making. From creating custom blends to learning about the different types of teas, there’s so much to explore! I’m excited to experiment with herbal blends and even may try my hand at making kombucha. I believe that tea is more than just a drink—it’s an experience. One I already partake in daily.

Why try it?
Tea making is a great way to slow down and savor the small moments in life. Crafting your own blends can be deeply relaxing, and learning about the health benefits of different herbs and spices is both fun and informative. Plus, nothing beats a warm cup of your very own creation on a chilly day.

6. Winemaking: Bottling Up Creativity

I’ve recently been watching @veganhippiesol’s wine-making videos on TikTok so of course I am now intrigued. So this year, I’m learning the process from start to finish. Since winemaking is a process of fermenting it doesn’t seem far off from pickling and 청 (Cheong is traditional Korean syrup made by mixing equal parts fruit or vegetables with sugar or honey and leaving it to sit), which I dabbled in during my time in Korea.

Why try it?
Winemaking is a unique blend of science and artistry. It’s a fantastic way to learn about fermentation, create something special, and even share your creations with friends and family. Plus, I imagine there’s something deeply satisfying about drinking wine you made yourself!

7. Diving (Scuba or Free): Exploring the Depths

This one is a little more adventurous, but it’s been on my bucket list since last year. Whether it's scuba diving or free diving, I’ve always been mesmerized and terrified by the underwater world. Now that I have delved into exploring the world, the idea of exploring oceanic wonders—like coral reefs and marine life—is a thrilling prospect. I’m hoping to dive into these waters (literally) this year and finally experience what it feels like to be weightless, surrounded by a world so different from our own.

Why try it?
Diving is the ultimate adventure for those who want to push their boundaries and explore new territories. Not only does it give you a chance to connect with nature uniquely, but it also helps you build confidence, as the skill and calm required to dive safely are empowering to develop.

8. Calisthenics: Strength Through Bodyweight Exercises

While I can’t say that I am new to calisthenics, this year, I’m determined to take it seriously. As I get ready for my travels abroad I’m excited to dive into calisthenics—a form of exercise that focuses on bodyweight movements like push-ups, pull-ups, and squats. Calisthenics can be done anywhere, anytime, which makes it ideal for a busy lifestyle. It’s all about using your own body to build strength and flexibility.

Why try it?
Calisthenics is a great way to build functional strength and improve overall fitness. It requires no gym membership (FREE99) or equipment, just your own body. Plus, the sense of accomplishment when you master a new movement or reach a fitness milestone is truly rewarding.

9. Bachata: Dancing Through the Year

If you know me, you know I’m always down for a good dance. This year, I’m diving into Bachata—a Latin dance that’s sensual, smooth, and so much fun! Whether I’m learning the basic steps or working on more intricate footwork, I can’t wait to incorporate Bachata into my fitness routine while enjoying its rich cultural history. (I may or may not also have a wedding to attend in Mexico at the end of the year).

Why try it?
Dancing is an incredible way to exercise while having fun. Bachata is particularly great for improving coordination, balance, and cardiovascular health. Plus, it’s a social dance that brings people together, so it’s perfect for meeting new friends!

10. Roller Skating: Glide Through Life

Last year, I discovered my love for roller skating, unfortunately, my skates are currently still in Busan. This year, I’m making it a priority to get out there and roll as much as possible. The joy of gliding through a park or down the street is unparalleled. Roller skating is a fun way to improve balance and get your heart pumping while enjoying the fresh air.

Why try it?
Roller skating is a nostalgic and playful way to stay active. It’s low-impact, which makes it easy on the joints, and it’s a full-body workout that targets your legs, core, and arms. Plus, it’s a blast!

11. Photography: Capturing Life’s Beautiful Moments

Clearly I lean more toward landscape photography 💜

One would assume that with all my traveling I would be an enthusiastic photographer by now. I believe the term is “Better late than never”. I’m committing to improving my skills and capturing the world more intentionally. Whether it’s snapping candid moments with friends, exploring the beauty of nature, or experimenting with new techniques, photography will allow me to see the world through a different lens (literally and figuratively!). I’m excited to experiment with different camera settings, play with lighting, and learn how to tell stories through my images. (I’m sure it’ll be best for this blog as well).

Why try it?
Photography is a creative outlet that sharpens your observation skills and allows you to preserve memories in a beautiful, tangible way. It encourages mindfulness by making you more aware of your surroundings, and it’s incredibly satisfying to look back at a photo and realize you’ve captured a meaningful moment. Plus, with the rise of social media, photography is a wonderful way to share your perspective and connect with others.

12. Flower Arranging: Nature’s Art

Lastly, I’m diving into flower arranging. I’ve always been drawn to the beauty of flowers, and this year, I want to learn how to arrange them in aesthetically pleasing ways. Whether it's for home décor, gifts, or special events, flower arranging is a great way to incorporate nature’s beauty into your life.

Why try it?
Flower arranging is a calming and therapeutic activity that connects you with nature. It encourages creativity and helps you develop an appreciation for the intricate beauty of flowers. Plus, the result is always visually stunning.

The Benefits of Trying New Things

As I embark on these exciting new hobbies this year, I’m reminded of how much growth and joy can come from trying something different. New hobbies bring an array of benefits to your life:

  • Creativity Boost: Whether it’s through painting, dancing, or cooking, trying new hobbies encourages you to think outside the box and tap into your creative potential.

  • Stress Relief: Engaging in hands-on activities helps to relieve stress and allows you to be present in the moment. Many of these hobbies are perfect for calming the mind and offering relaxation.

  • Personal Growth: Stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing new challenges leads to personal growth. You learn new skills, push your limits, and experience a sense of accomplishment.

  • Connection: Whether it’s meeting others in a class or sharing your creations with loved ones, new hobbies often bring people together and help you build meaningful connections.

So, here’s to a year full of new adventures! If you’re looking to shake things up and try something new this year, consider jumping into one of these hobbies. Let’s make this year the year of creativity, exploration, and growth!
