How I Manage My Period While Traveling: Real Tips for Comfort on the Go

I’m writing this curled up in bed, surrounded by snacks and two bottles of water. Yep—it’s that time of the month again.

Normally, I would’ve written this post in advance and had it scheduled to publish so I could spend the next few days switching between reading, TikTok, and whatever new drama series has taken over my life. But as you can imagine, staying organized and giving yourself grace is a little harder when you're traveling.

So, how do I manage my period while traveling?
Let’s just say I’ve learned a few things the hard way.

These are the small-but-mighty things I do to make my period more bearable, no matter where I am in the world—and why I’m extra intentional when I’m away from home.

1. Track Your Menstrual Cycle—It’s a Game Changer

One of the best things I ever did for myself was start tracking my cycle. I use the Aavia app, and ever since I downloaded it, my period has stopped catching me off guard. I can plan my adventures around my cycle, making space for energy-filled excursions and the days I just need to rest.

Knowing when my period is coming makes it easier to say yes to the things I love and no when I need a break.

2. Schedule Rest Days While Traveling

I don't always spend the whole cycle in bed, but I do plan for less.
Fewer outings. Less strenuous activity. Less work. Less guilt.

I intentionally leave space in my itinerary to nap, journal, or lie in bed if that’s what my body needs. Because let’s be honest—some periods are heavier than others, and your body deserves compassion wherever you are in the world.

3. Be Mindful of What You Eat and Drink

Traveling during your period doesn’t mean ignoring your body’s needs—it means tuning in more closely.

A few personal rules I follow:

  • I avoid alcohol about three days before my period starts. It makes my cramps worse and my mood dips lower.

  • I choose chocolate over cocktails, but if I’m being real, fruit and veggies are even better.

  • I drink lots of water and herbal tea—hydration is non-negotiable. (Ginger and chamomile are my go-to!)

4. Prioritize Comfort Over Vacation Aesthetics

I love a cute outfit as much as anyone, especially when I'm somewhere new. But when I’m on my period, comfort is queen.

Trust me: nothing ruins a great photo faster than being uncomfortable in it.
So I make sure to pack at least one or two outfits that are:

  • Soft

  • Loose-fitting

  • Still makes me feel beautiful

There’s a way to do cute and cozy. And when you feel good, it shows—period or not.
